Line Of Duty Investigation - Line of Duty's Adrian Dunbar, Vicki McClure and Martin Compston reveal what filming the interrogation scenes was really like
In April 2017, 10.4 million viewers on BBC1 watched the four final series of Line of Duty. In a surprisingly tense episode, Adrian Dunbar's Superintendent Ted Hastings survives an attempt to remove Jade Mercurio as head of AC-12, the internal police anti-corruption unit at the center of the series. .

The once granite morality of the Northern Irishman is chipped away by the suggestion that Hastings becomes "H" the most senior figure in the corrupt police network. In the same episode, Vicky McClure's DS Kate Fleming and Martin Compston's DS Steve Arnott besiege AC-12's headquarters, disarming one of the "Balaclava Men", responsible for the robbery and murder.
When Will Line Of Duty Return And What Will Season 6 Look Like?
The frustrating two-year wait for a fifth series came after showrunner Mercurio took a sabbatical to work on BBC1 police thriller, Bodyguard. It was so successful (17.06 million watched the final episode) that the trailer for Line of Duty 5, shown on BBC1 on 3 March, began with the headline "From the makers of Bodyguard". Since its rise in 2012, from a BBC2 cult to a BBC1 primetime franchise, we've been surprised by what many consider Line of Duty to be the superior and superior series.
The trailer shows more balaclava men and a young officer who reveals that the codename "H" appears again in this investigation, however, Mercurio is careful to include more characters. Those whose first or second name begins with the eighth letter of the alphabet, which plot-speculators rarely get.
After the ominous sound that signaled the start of recording, I quizzed Adrian Dunbar, Vicky McClure and Martin Compston about what we can expect in series five coming soon to BBC1.

Martin Compston During four months of filming in Belfast, the three of us had curry nights with Jade at least three times a week. So we can draw some clues as to where his thinking is going.
Adrian Dunbar But we never heard the series from Jade. And there are no rumors. So here we have what the audience has - how were the last few scenes? Is there anything worth knowing where we're going? But, to be honest, all three of us are in the same position as spectators.
VICKY McCLURE When scripts come in, I try to make sure I'm the first one to read them so I can WhatsApp Adrian and Martin to let them know what they've got, who they've got. Since Martin lives in Las Vegas, the time difference helped me get ahead of him.
AD people always think we need to know in advance - from Jade or our agents - how many episodes we've already booked in the next series. But you never know. You never know when you open the first script it's going to be "Jason Watkins Time"! [His character didn't last very long in the fourth series.] And, I'll tell you, the more you have to do in the first few episodes, the more you fear it's going to blow you out.

VM I'm sure Jade will have a word with us now before that happens. I don't think he'll let us know by the number of scripts he's sent. But, yes, we all know that there might be a time when that happens. But I think he warned us.
MC I'm sure Jed wouldn't just sit back and do anything. If he decides it's time, I can't complain: I have four series - and this is the fifth of the best scripts of my working life.
AD Oh, we will. Can the person come back? What does the line mean? But we don't know what the central topic of discussion is. This series looks at organized crime groups. I saw a figure that organized crime costs the UK £35 billion a year. So Jade was on the brink of something that really happened politically.
VM We are already thinking about the next series. I have different guesses about where this is going, but I can't tell you, because it gives too much away. And, anyway, Jade really likes to throw curveballs.

MC We all have theories about how the whole thing is going to come together because it's a big question. But if I tell you mine, I'm definitely not in the next series!
Surely the fact that Ted was the only Catholic in the Northern Irish police force during the Troubles could be relevant? Even black balaclavas have a Northern Irish resonance as they are worn in paramilitary garb?
Eddie Yes, Ted's time in Northern Ireland is an important part of the show. And the fact that we actually shot the show there made it even more interesting. The question is who H will make a comeback in the new series. And Belfast may have something to do with it. It explores the last series hint that Ted is hiding something.
In stage and film work, you have all available information about a character from the beginning. In Line of Duty, you might suddenly find out about Ted, Kate or Steve. Have you ever thought: I wish I knew this when we were shooting the two series?

AD is a very interesting question. I'm worried about that because it's the first returning series I've done. And sometimes it's a little scary, not knowing where your character is going to go. You just have to go with what's on the page, and trust that Jade is thoughtfully handling the character's story arc - you keep your fingers crossed with it.
MC is an interesting job in that sense. Because not only do you get to examine your own character's flaws in each series, but guest characters also introduce a new backstory.
Was returning to the character for the new series perhaps the biggest challenge for you, Martin, as you're a Scot playing a Londoner?
MC I still have a lot of work to do. Learning the script, if I find a delivery of a line I like, I record it and play it back when I'm walking the dog. But I lost my temper. In the first series, I wouldn't get out of the accent from the time we got to Belfast until the last day of shooting. But now, sometimes, I let it go.

The series is unique because Adrian and Vicki are used to doing it, but [new guest star] Stephen Graham is an old friend of mine and he's never heard of me doing it. So when I go to dinner with him, I go back to Scottish. And when my wife [American actress Tiana Chanel Flynn] came to visit me. But I tried to stick with it because as the series became more successful, each vowel checker became more accent checker. The most difficult thing is the complex terminology of the pronunciation police.
As the series has grown, has there been a lot of feedback in your day-to-day life?
AD is a bit more. But I wear glasses in real life and so people don't recognize me because I don't wear glasses on the show. That helped me a lot.
MC people are great. "No spoilers!" They come to you saying this. - As if you told them something! It's interesting because they don't really want to know.

Fully ed. It is a show that people watch in real time because of the twists and turns. I'm watching it unfold in real time, something I've never been able to do with anything I've been involved with.
VM But they want to know when it will happen. As it gets closer and the "Coming Soon" track starts, people keep asking me, "When does it start?!"
Those long interrogation scenes have become a signature of the series. Was it too big for you in terms of learning lines and shooting?
AD They are a big deal. That's one of the things that makes this show unique. And they are fun to do.

MC At first, you hope you're not in a really big interrogation scene because of the work that goes into it. But then, if you don't have that, you're kind of screwed because it's the focus of the series.
VM really. If you are not in a scene, you feel a combination of pain and pleasure.
MC It's a bit different for me because I play the suspect myself
